New Image Art presents “Pave” a group exhibition curated by Jeffrey Cheung, Gabriel Ramirez of Unity Press & Skateboarding and Mariel Eplboim of New Image Art Gallery. This exhibition explores queerness and skateboarding through the lens of otherness and radical inclusivity. Featuring a mix of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and a collaborative installation with works by more than 35 artists, this exhibition aims to bring together trans artists, queer artists and artists of color.
 
In June 2016 the New York Times published an article entitled Brian Anderson, Skateboarding Star, Comes Out as Gay which revealed, “For all its countercultural cool, skateboarding has historically been party to the same kinds of homophobia found in other male-dominated institutions.” More recently, skateboarding culture has shifted, thanks to people like Brian Anderson (professional skateboarder), Lacey Baker, and Unity Skateboarding, to name a few.
 
Pave is a means to represent those who are pushing the boundaries and reimagining the hyper-masculine skate culture through art making. The artistic vein of skateboarding has been encompassed by zine making, innovative filmmaking, and street photography, amongst many other type of creative outlets, which is how Unity Press came to fruition. The exhibition is based on Unity Press & Skateboarding's mission to support and build a community for queer skaters and artists, in which they are able to create and build camaraderie.

As repression grows deeper in the United States, skate and press collectives like Unity are vital to change. This exhibition is not only a new frontier in skateboarding art, but a movement about acceptance, which is needed now more than ever.
